Hot tub, sauna and cold plunge decks
A hot tub deck has to carry a lot of weight, stay safe with wet feet, and be pleasant on a snowy January night. We design the deck around your tub, sauna or plunge from the very start.
Framed for the weight
A filled hot tub is one of the heaviest things you can put on a deck. We plan the framing and footings under it for that load, with extra footings, closer joist spacing, or a steel frame built for the job. If the tub sits on a slab, we build the deck around it instead.

Recessed or surround
- Recessed: the deck is built up to the rim of the tub, so it looks built-in and you step down into the water.
- Surround: the tub sits on a pad or the deck, with composite steps and a skirt wrapped around it. Easier to service and great for patios.
Either way we leave access panels so the tub's equipment can be serviced.
Hot tub decks we've built
- Highland: a backyard retreat built around two hot tubs, with TimberTech Vintage English Walnut, a timber-frame pavilion, HideAway privacy screens and lights on every step.
- Sundance: a mountain cabin deck for a barrel sauna and a hot tub, with a curved waterfall bench and black privacy screens.
- South Jordan: a covered second-story deck with fiber optic lights in the underside, so the hot tub patio below glows like a starry sky.
- Pleasant Grove: a magazine-cover Trex deck with the hot tub on the covered patio underneath.

Privacy, lighting and winter use
- Privacy: HideAway screens, privacy railing panels and walls block sight lines without closing in the deck.
- Lighting: step, riser and recessed lights keep wet-foot trips safe at night. See our lighting ideas.
- Materials: TimberTech and Trex boards don't rot, resist stains and stay slip-resistant when wet.
- Winter: a short, lit path from the back door and a place to sit between soaks make the tub easy to use all winter. A covered deck keeps snow off.

Common questions
Can my deck hold a hot tub?
A deck has to be designed for a hot tub. A filled tub with people in it is very heavy, so we plan extra footings, closer joist spacing or a steel frame under that spot. We design the deck around the tub from the start rather than adding it later.
Should the hot tub be recessed into the deck?
A recessed tub sits with its rim at deck level, so you step down into the water and it looks built-in. A surround keeps the tub on a pad or the deck with composite steps around it, which is easier to service. We help you choose based on your yard and tub.
Can you build for a sauna or cold plunge?
Yes. We have built decks for barrel saunas and cold plunges as well as hot tubs, including a Sundance cabin deck with a sauna, hot tub and waterfall bench.
How do you add privacy around a hot tub?
TimberTech HideAway privacy screens, privacy railing panels and privacy walls block the neighbors’ view while keeping the deck open to the sky.
